Washington County sheriff’s deputies responded to a fatality accident near Prairie Grove late Monday night.

The victim, whose identity had not been confirmed Wednesday, was reportedly burned beyond recognition.

“We do have an idea of who it might be, but we can’t speculate without having a positive identification,” said Kelly Cantrell, spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “We will hopefully hear from the crime lab by the end of the week.”

Washington County deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident across from 15949 Cove Creek Road, County Road 21, at about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Witnesses reported seeing a Chevrolet pickup fully engulfed in flames. When deputies arrived, Prairie Grove Fire Department was on the scene actively fighting the blaze.

Once the fire was extinguished, a body burned beyond recognition, was reportedly found inside the vehicle. Emergency workers initially requested Air Evac, but canceled the request a few minutes later and requested the coroner. There were no other occupants.

Investigators believe the victim failed to negotiate a curve on Cove Creek Road. The vehicle reportedly skidded more than 50 feet before leaving the road, flipping at least once and coming to rest in a creek.

The victim’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for positive identification.

“ e can’t release any further information regarding the victim at this time,” Cantrell said.

Circumstances surrounding the accident are still being investigated by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
